Greifswald 1990/2019

Greifswald is located between Usedom and Rügen, where the A20 motorway makes a big bend. The old Hanseatic city with its three-church skyline is connected to the Baltic Sea by the River Ryck. It is also home to important places in the city’s history.

Caspar David Friedrich was born here and had his favourite motif, the Eldena monastery ruins, right on his doorstep. He incorporated it into various other landscapes, from the sea to the mountains. On the way to Eldena is the Wieck fishing harbour with its historic bascule bridge. The Baltic Sea is very close here and is prevented from flooding the town by a barrage.

Greifswald has really spruced itself up in the last 30 years. Many new buildings have been erected, old ones demolished and some sites can no longer be found. Around the old town centre, with its town hall, cathedral, St Mary’s Church and market square with its historic buildings, the university is everywhere. Students everywhere, university buildings and the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg. The city wall almost completely surrounds the ensemble and is complemented in some places by modern buildings in the masonry style.

If you fancy a tasty and inexpensive lunch or coffee and cake, we recommend the “Café Lichtblick” at the town hall.
