Wismar: Wasserkunst und Hanse
Was hat Wismar mit Lübeck und Hamburg zu tun? Richtig, die Hanse, ein Bündnis von Kaufmanns- städten im Mittelalter. Und heute gehören die Städte wieder zur Europäischen Metropolregion Hamburg. Geschichte wiederholt sich, manchmal. Zusammen mit Stralsund gehört sie zum UNESCO Welterbe. Trotz vieler Schäden bei Bombeangriffem im 2. Weltkrieg ist die Stadt als kunsthistorisches Dankmal sehenswert. Vieles wurde wieder aufgebaut, einiges, wie die Marienkirche ist noch Ruine oder bedarf dringend des Wiederaufbaus.
Rund um die Marktplatz mit seiner Wasserkunst ist das Touristische Zentrum. Viele Cafés, Restaurants und Geschäfte haben hier eröffnet. Das Karstadt Stammhaus steht in der Nähe und der Hafen ist nicht weit.
What does Wismar have to do with Lübeck and Hamburg? That’s right, the Hanseatic League, an alliance of merchant cities in the Middle Ages. And today the cities are once again part of the European metropolitan region of Hamburg. History repeats itself, sometimes. Together with Stralsund, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite much damage during bombing raids in the Second World War, the city is worth seeing as an art-historical monument. Much has been rebuilt, but some, such as St Mary’s Church, is still in ruins or in urgent need of reconstruction.
The tourist centre is around the market square with its waterworks. Many cafés, restaurants and shops have opened here. The Karstadt flagship store is nearby and the harbour is not far away.
