1,000 years ago, a Wendenburg castle stood here between lakes and marshes. After another 150 years, it became a town. Henry the Lion was honoured with a monument on the market square.

A lot of time has passed since then and Schwerin has grown, got a cathedral, a castle, is the oldest city in Mecklenburg and the capital of the state. Its old town centre is well preserved and the half-timbered houses frame the cathedral, which hovers above them. A medieval building, bright and simple inside.

The castle, on an island between Schwerin’s inner lake and the castle lake. It is not far from the market square. The ensemble is to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for which an application process is underway. It is the seat of the state parliament and a magnet for visitors. The cross canal in the castle garden is laid out like the floor plan of a cathedral and was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné.
