Hoch über der Saale thront das Schloß, auf dem sich Till Eulenspiegel als Turmbläser verdingt haben soll. Vom Turm herab beobachtete er die Umgebung und sorgte für Sicherheit. Heute können Touristen den Ausblick genießen. Das Schloß selbst wirkt noch ein wenig renovierungsbedürftig, wie so vieles in der Stadt. Die Zeit hat hier viele Spuren hinterlassen. Schon aus der jüngsten Steinzeit wurden Dinge gefunden und die nachfolgenden Generationen bauten, brandschatzten, bauten wieder, und es entstand ein Ort voller Geschichte.
Ein Rundgang durch die Oberstadt mit Fussgängerzone, Blick vom Schloß auf die Saale, Überquerung auf der Fähre und weiter durch die Unterstadt ist äußerst Abwechslungsreich. Ein paar Cafés und Restaurants laden ein.

The castle towers high above the Saale River; it is said that Till Eulenspiegel once worked there as a tower trumpeter. From the tower, he kept watch over the surroundings and ensured safety. Today, tourists can enjoy the view. The castle itself still looks a bit in need of renovation, like so much else in the city. Time has left its mark here. Artifacts dating back to the Early Stone Age have been found, and subsequent generations built, burned, and rebuilt, creating a place steeped in history.
A stroll through the Upper Town with its pedestrian zone, a view of the Saale River from the castle, a ferry crossing, and on through the Lower Town is extremely varied. A few cafés and restaurants invite you in.
