Weiter auf dem Weg nach Burgos, durch unendliche Landschaft, gespickt mit Wachtürmen wieder ein typischer kleiner Ort mit einer riesigen Burganlage und der Kollegiatkirche für einen Bischof. Die knapp 820 Einwohnern sind etwas wenig für die großen Anlagen drumherum. Junge Menschen hält es hier nicht und wenn sich die Bewohner:innen abends auf dem kleinen Marktplatz zum Kartenspiel treffen, ist der Altersdurchschnitt recht hoch. Trotzdem haben es einige gewagt, hier neue Existenzen aufzubauen. So das kleine Hotel Rural Villa de Berlanga mit moderner Ausstattung und toller Lage an der Kollegiatkirche und Blick auf die Festung.
Ein Entdecker kam aus diesem kleinen Ort. Fray Thomas de Berlanga, Bischof von Panama und Entdecker der Galapagos Inseln. Zu seinem Andenken hing lange ein ausgestopftes Krokodil in der Kathedrale. Sein Geburtshaus unterhalb der Burg ist heute noch mit blühenden Ranken geschmückt.
Die Colegiata de Santa María del Mercado (Berlanga de Duero) versetzt die Besucher direkt ins Mittelalter. In nur 4 Jahren wurde dieser Bau erreichtet, was für damalige und heutige, Verhältnisse eine Expressbauzeit darstellt. Ausgestattet mit üppigen Altären und imposanten Kunstwerken.
Die Ruine der Burg thront auf einem Hügel über dem Ort. Sie ist ein spätmittelalterlicher Festungsbau mit hohen Mauern, Fensterlosen Gebäuden und einen riesigen Bergfried, der auch den einzigen Zugang darstellt. Besucher sollten gut zu Fuß sein, der Weg ist steil
Continuing on the way to Burgos, through endless countryside dotted with watchtowers, we come to another typical small town with a massive castle complex and a collegiate church dedicated to a bishop. The population of just under 820 seems a bit small for the vast structures surrounding it. Young people aren’t drawn to this place, and when the residents gather in the small town square in the evenings to play cards, the average age is quite high. Nevertheless, a few have dared to build new lives here. Take the small Hotel Rural Villa de Berlanga, with modern amenities and a great location next to the collegiate church, offering a view of the fortress.
An explorer hailed from this small town: Fray Thomas de Berlanga, Bishop of Panama and discoverer of the Galápagos Islands. In his memory, a stuffed crocodile hung in the cathedral for many years. His birthplace below the castle is still adorned with flowering vines today.
The Colegiata de Santa María del Mercado (Berlanga de Duero) transports visitors straight back to the Middle Ages. This building was completed in just four years, which represents an express construction time by both historical and modern standards. It is adorned with lavish altars and impressive works of art.
The castle ruins sit atop a hill overlooking the town. It is a late-medieval fortress with high walls, windowless buildings, and a massive keep, which also serves as the only entrance. Visitors should be in good physical condition, as the path is steep.
