New York: Staten Island – Brooklyn Hights
New York geht ohne Wasser gar nicht. Daher sind zwei Fahrten ein Muss. Einmal mit der Fähre abends nach Staten Island. Das Manhattan Panorama im Sonnenuntergang für Romantiker und die Fahrt ist auch noch kostenlos. Und später mit einer der Fähren (2,50 $) eine rasante Fahrt von Brooklyn über den Eastriver nach Norden Richtung UN. Unten den Brücken, durch das Hafengelände an Long Island vorbei.
Die Brooklyn Heights sind ein schnuckeliger Stadtteil gegenüber von Manhattan. Wenn dort nicht die riesigen Brückenauffahrten, die mehrstöckigen Straßenzüge am Fluß oder die Schnellbahnstrecken wären. Der Verkehr ist allgegenwärtig und ununterbrochen.
Zwischendurch allerdings schöne, kleine Straßen mit netten Geschäften und Cafés. Wochenmarkt mit Obst, Gemüse und New York Cheasecake, Wohngebiete. Und dann DUMBO “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”. Zwischen Manhattan und Brooklyn Bridge, ein ehemaliges Industrie und Hafengelände wird zum Kulturplatz mit Wohnungen, Theater, Geschäften. Am Ufer Fähren und Parks, Karussell und wieder Panorama auf Manhattan. Der Schiffsverkehr auf East und Hudson River ist heftig. Vom Segelboot zum Containerschiff zu Fähren und Jachten. Bänke, um dies alles zu beobachten, gibt es genug.
New York is impossible without water. So two trips are a must. One is by ferry to Staten Island in the evening. The Manhattan panorama at sunset for romantics and the trip is also free. And later, take one of the ferries ($2.50) for a speedy ride from Brooklyn across the East River north towards the UN. Under the bridges, through the harbor area past Long Island.
Brooklyn Heights is a cute neighborhood opposite Manhattan. If it weren’t for the huge bridge approaches, the multi-storey streets along the river and the rapid transit lines. The traffic is omnipresent and uninterrupted.
In between, however, there are lovely little streets with nice stores and cafés. Weekly markets with fruit, vegetables and New York cheesecake, residential areas. And then DUMBO “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”. Between Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge, a former industrial and port area becomes a cultural square with apartments, theaters, stores. Ferries and parks on the shore, a carousel and another panorama of Manhattan. The shipping traffic on the East and Hudson Rivers is heavy. From sailing boats to container ships to ferries and yachts. There are plenty of benches to watch it all.
