Indien: Betelnuss

ASIEN, Indien, Landwirtschaft, Reisen

Betel nuts are the fruit of a type of palm tree that is often planted to provide shade in tea and coffee plantations or between cocoa trees. After they have been cut from the soft shell, boiled and dried in the sun, they are mixed with chewing tobacco or other spices to counteract the bitter taste. They are cheap to buy and stain the teeth dark red to black. A legal narcotic and a popular way to numb hunger or stay awake despite hard work.
