Wer einen weiten Blick auf das Kathmandutal haben möchte, sollte auf den Hügel zum Swayambhunath Tempel steigen. Die Aussicht ist herrlich und die Sicht, sobald die Smogschicht sich gelichtet haben sollte, weit. Die Tempelanlage gilt mit ihren 2.300 Jahren, als die zweitälteste der Welt.
Die Tempelanlage hat sich der Legende nach selbst aus einer Lotusblüte im ehemaligen See des Tales erschaffen. So lautet auch der Name „Der aus sich selbst erstandene Gott“.
Im Umfeld der zentralen Stupa liegen zahlreiche Nebengebäude, so auch zwei Hinduistische Heiligtümer. Manchmal ist der Übergang zwischen den Religionen für Außenstehende schwer zu erkennen.
If you want a sweeping view of the Kathmandu Valley, you should climb the hill to the Swayambhunath temple. The view is marvellous and, as soon as the smog has cleared, you can see far and wide. At 2,300 years old, the temple complex is considered to be the second oldest in the world.
According to legend, the temple complex created itself from a lotus blossom in the valley’s former lake. This is also the reason for its name, ‘The God who arose from himself’.
There are numerous outbuildings around the central stupa, including two Hindu shrines. Sometimes the transition between the religions is difficult for outsiders to recognise.
