In den 1950er Jahren stand die Bodnath Stupa fast alleine auf weitem Feld. Rundherum nur ein Kreis von Gebäuden und Tempeln in der ländlichen Umgebung. Heute liegt das Heiligtum inmitten der geschäftigen Stadt. Beim Eintritt in das Gelände macht sich eine beruhigende Atmosphäre bemerkbar. Die Hektik bleibt draußen, während hunderte von Pilgern die Stupa umrunden. Sie ist die mit 36 m Höhe größte ihrer Art und geht auf das 5. Jahrhundert zurück. Was sich in ihr befindet weiss niemand.
Einmal im Jahr wird die Stupa neu geweisst und zum Neujahrsfest mit Safranbögen geschmückt. Auch die Gebetsfahnen werden erneuert und alles festlich ausstaffiert. Einen wunderbaren Blick hat man von einem der umliegenden Klöster. In diesem Komplex lebt auch der Cini-Lama, der dritthöchste Würdenträger der Tibeter nach dem Dalai Lama und dem Panchen Lama.
In the 1950s, the Bodnath Stupa stood almost alone in a vast field. All around it was just a circle of buildings and temples in the middle of the rural surroundings. Today, the shrine is located in the centre of the bustling city. As you enter the grounds, you notice a calming atmosphere. The hustle and bustle stays outside as hundreds of pilgrims circle the stupa. At 36 metres high, it is the largest of its kind and dates back to the 5th century. Nobody knows what is inside.
Once a year, the stupa is re-whitewashed and decorated with saffron arches for the New Year celebrations. The prayer flags are also renewed and everything is festively decorated. There is a wonderful view from one of the surrounding monasteries. The Cini Lama, the third highest Tibetan dignitary after the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama, also lives in this complex.
