Das gefühl beim Abstieg in die Metro am Times Square war “hier wird ein Alptraum wahr”. Höllisch laut, heiß, eng, dunkel, niedrig, Menschenmengen. Es war vielleicht die falsche Station für die erste Fahrt. Oder man gewöhnt sich an den Temperaturunterschied zwischen überheiztem Bahnhof und stark runter gekühlter Bahn, der Enge auf den Bahnsteigen, wo oft keine zwei Personen aneinander vorbei gehen können, die Lautstärke, den Schimmel und den Schmutz.

Als Verkerhrsmittel allerdings Ideal. Schnell, häufig und billig. Bei einer Woche Aufenthalt ist es relativ egal, ob man die 7-Tage-Karte für 32 $ kauft oder eine aufladbare Dauerkarte. Die einfach Fahrt kostet 2,80 $, mit der Dauerkarte 2,50 $. Kaufen kann man die Dauerkarten in den Metrostationen nur in bar. In den Zügen fahren alle, Stadtneurotiker, Touristen, Radfahrer, Banker, Familien. Ein buntes Gewimmel, zu jeder Tageszeit anders zusammengesetzt.

The feeling when descending into the subway at Times Square was “this is a nightmare come true”. Hellishly loud, hot, narrow, dark, low, crowds. Maybe it was the wrong station for the first ride. Or you get used to the difference in temperature between an overheated station and a heavily cooled train, the cramped conditions on the platforms where often no two people can pass each other, the noise, the mold and the dirt.

As a means of transportation, however, it is ideal. Fast, frequent and cheap. For a week’s stay, it doesn’t matter whether you buy the 7-day ticket for $32 or a rechargeable season ticket. A single journey costs 2.80 $, with the season ticket 2.50 $. You can only buy season tickets in the metro stations in cash. Everyone rides the trains: city neurotics, tourists, cyclists, bankers, families. A colorful hustle and bustle, with a different composition at every time of day.
