Marokko: El Jadida

AFRIKA, Marokko, Reisen, Street Photografie

The new one”, built by Arab settlers after the native Berbers were driven out, used by the Portuguese, Spanish and Italians as a stop on the sea route to India and developed into a fortress. A medium-sized town on the Atlantic, 100 km south of Casablanca, lively, with many small stores, a market and fishing port. Nothing unusual really, if the Portuguese had not built Mazagão at the end of the 15th century. A fortress by the sea, with cannons and walls, cistern and oven, shipyard and harbor.

Still inhabited as a tourist magnet, life has not given way to a doll’s house.
The Portuguese old town (Cité Portugaise) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
