Endless expanses at 1,600 m above sea level. High plateaus surrounded by 2,500 m high peaks. Roads that wind adventurously upwards. Barren and desolate, hardly any vegetation, sparsely populated. And then suddenly oases, vast date palm plantations, rose bushes, apple trees. Minerals are mined, fossils have been lying in the rock strata for 4.5 million years, precious stones are hidden in the rocks. The diversity of this region is visible to insiders.

In the middle of it all is a movie town. It’s all a backdrop, the ancient Kasbah is barely recognizable, built and managed by Berbers, Arabs and Jews. An abandoned desert town, a fortress mountain on the river, used by countless filmmakers for their works. Everything to do with Egypt, Jesus, Moses and fantasy was filmed here. New cities made of concrete are being built, the old ones made of clay, ash and straw are falling into ruin. They will disappear forever.
