Ethiopia is high, very high. The capital alone lies between 2,200 and 3,000 meters, between mountains, hills and plains. As a Central European, you have to catch your breath.

Addis Ababa, the “new flower” and the center of Ethiopia. With a population of well over 3,500,000, the city is a huge, unmanageable molloch. Between new buildings and slums, huts, markets and churches, life is bustling. Many young people who see no future in the rural areas seek their fortune in the city and find Qad (Catha edulis). A shrub that looks like tea and has intoxicating effects. Sold openly in the markets, it draws the last birr out of people’s pockets. Boys and girls are sexually exploited to pay for the smoking drug.

Addis Ababa lies at the foot of Mount Entoto. From the 3000 meter high plateau you have a panoramic view of the entire city. The St. Mary’s Church (entoto maryam, built in 1885) on the mountain overlooks the entire city and the surrounding area.
