Bethlehem

ARABISCH, Historisch, ISRAEL, Reisen, VORDERASIEN

Bethlehem is located in the Palestinian autonomous area of the West Bank. The birthplace of Jesus and one of the holiest sites in Christianity is surrounded by a high wall and large signs warn against entering the area. Israel is afraid of terrorists who could move from city to city to Jerusalem. Not that the wall is insurmountable, but in an area that has been bristling with walls for centuries, it is further evidence of mutual mistrust.

The Church of the Nativity is currently being restored and groups of visitors have to push their way through scaffolding. Shortly before the passage to the Grotto of the Nativity, there is pushing and shoving. There are hardly any visitors who don’t use their elbows. This is also noticeable at other sites from the life of Christ. There is pushing and shoving everywhere, and there is little sign of consideration.
