I’m an ooold scottisch Lady and I had a glas of wine to much”.

From a distance, it looks as if Antoni Gaudi and Friedensreich Hundertwasser had strayed to Lalibela. The Ben Abeba Restaurant stands on a rocky outcrop far above the town. The view is magnificent, albeit very draughty. Everything is open, the platforms rise up like flowers, in between a pointed hat with a twisted staircase.

Who would come up with such an idea? During the meal, a lady joins us and introduces herself as the owner. When asked why and why not, she replies in broad Scottish: “I’m an ooold scottish lady and I had a glass of wine to much”. Her young neighbor had invited her over and told her about his plans for a school project in Ethiopia. She, a former teacher of home economics and gastronomy, was persuaded to come with him. School was not enough for Susan Aitchison, she wanted to train young people, give them a chance and build a restaurant. Not just any restaurant, the restaurant. Planned by architecture students from Addis Abeda, unusual, exciting.

Together with their Ethiopian partner Habtamu Baye, they provide training and serve traditional dishes from local cultivation. The region and the people benefit and the story is not over yet, Susan still has energy for three more.

If you happen to be in the area or are planning to visit, just drop by the Ben Abeba Restaurant
